Summary

EGX is one of the largest and most liquid markets in MENA and second only to South Africa’s JSE on the continent. Rooted in Cairo and Alexandria, it is widely held by international institutions.

History & context

Formed from the merger of the Alexandria Exchange (1883) and the Cairo Exchange (1903), it is among the oldest exchanges in the Middle East and has grown with Egypt’s modernization.

Characteristics & key sectors

Large banks such as CIB sit alongside real estate, telecoms, and materials. High foreign participation and relatively advanced disclosure make it a regional benchmark.
